Refugee and Needy Support Services

Helping refugees and needy families settle in the Triangle area during their first, most difficult weeks and months.

Overview

A number of our Muslim brethren are being forced to flee their home country due to fear of persecution, war, or violence. Upon arrival, these individuals and families need help settling down for the first few weeks or months, until they secure employment or other means of income needed to become self-sufficient. The Social & Welfare Committee offers help to refugees who need support for the first couple of months, if deemed eligible.

How Refugees Are Referred to IAR

Newly arrived refugees are normally put in touch with the IAR Social & Welfare Committee through the sponsoring agency assigned by the US Government — primarily the Lutheran Foundation, through which refugees arrive in the Triangle area. The Social & Welfare Committee maintains regular contact with the Lutheran Foundation and is notified of new refugee arrivals in our area.

However, if this has not been the case, please contact the Social & Welfare Committee using the contact information below to let us know about new refugees.

How the Committee Helps

The Social & Welfare Committee’s Refugee Support Sub-committee works with the Lutheran Foundation to help refugees settle in the area — offering a hot meal on the day of arrival and the payment of rent. The Committee works with the local community and the IAR Support Group to solicit donations of goods and funds to sustain this support for refugees.

Existing Social & Welfare Committee Programs

Refugees can utilize the following existing Social & Welfare Committee programs established at IAR as well.
